Compression Packing: Here’s How It Works

Compression packing and fluid sealing solutions have been used for more than 5,000 years when horsehair was coated with animal fat for lubrication and sealing. Since then, with advancements in technology, compression packing has evolved, and greater scrutiny has been placed on fluid leakages.

Effective compression packing and engineered industrial parts are essential components of a smooth operating machine. One of the most common methods of sealing services is compression packing.

What is Compression Packing?

Compression packing is a mechanical seal part in a piece of machinery or equipment. Compression seals are manufactured using soft materials and consist of a set of rings, which are installed to conceal leakage in a rotating machine.

Uses of Compression Packing

Compression packing is one of the most common components used to limit fluid loss in mechanical equipment. These parts are majorly used in process industries such as chemical, petrol, and pharmaceutical.

Compression packing is a sealing solution for all kinds of fluids such as water, acids, oil, gasoline, and steam over different temperature and pressure environments. Some common examples of machines where compression seals are used are mixers, agitators, centrifugal pumps, and rotary pumps.

Compression packing is easy to install and operate. With attention to detail and proper maintenance, you can increase the life of your machines and equipment.

However, if you are unsure about how to use compression packing you can always get technical support from our experienced professionals. We provide onsite assistance as well as high quality industrial compression seals

How Does Compression Packing Work?

The functionality of a compression packing depends on the fluid characteristics between the surfaces of rotating machinery. Fluids can come from either the compression packing, built-in lubricants in the liquid supply of the machine, or a combination of both.

When the equipment is powered on, the built-in lubricants of the machine are released from the compression packing by exerting pressure to provide sealing.  As the machine starts to operate, a continuous flow of lubricants is provided by adjusting the force applied by the compression packing.

The pressure exerted by compression packing is regularly monitored and optimized to provide optimum lubrication, preventing the machine from overheating and breaking down.
