Failed Reactor Seals: Here’s How To Repair A Reactor’s Mechanical Seal

Mechanical reactors are essential machinery used in a variety of industries such as nuclear and chemical. These machines are commonly found in nuclear power plants and are used to generate electricity.

The first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1, was assembled in 1924, and due to the availability of highly enriched uranium, the technology has considerably evolved.

History tells us that the smooth operation of such reactors is of paramount importance. Any breakdown or leakages of this equipment can have disastrous consequences, such as those experienced in Chernobyl.

The reactor vessels used in commercial aspects are thick-walled metallic conductors designed to absorb pressure and corrosion in a high-temperature environment—examples include Pfaudler’s glass-lined reactor.

Mechanical Seal Parts In A Reactor

A vital component of a reactor is the mechanical seal parts. Custom design mechanical seals are available for purchase to meet the requirements of the reactor. The mechanical seal is made up of moving and static rings, elastic components, auxiliary seals of static and rotating rings, and fastening screws.

The reactor is a detailed reaction vessel. High pressure is generated during operation, which requires top-notch mechanical sealing solutions. The fluid sealing solution directly affects the operation of the reactor vessel. Ineffective sealing can cause unnecessary breakdowns and hazards, which will require mechanical seal repair services.

Causes of Failure

While operating, a mechanical seal can break down due to wear and chemical erosion. With time, hot cracking, deformation, and breakages can appear on the sealing face.

Excessive vibration can also cause the mechanical seal to fail. Due to improper installation, seals can be damaged even before they start operating. Therefore, it’s essential to get the help of experts like Robco of America, who can provide technical and onsite assistance and engineered industrial parts.

Lack of lubrication is also an essential factor in the failure of mechanical seals. Therefore, adequate fluid sealing solutions are of paramount importance for the smooth functioning of a reactor.

How To Do A Reactor Seal Repair

First, disconnect the power supply of the reactor. You don’t want the reactor to turn on while you’re repairing the seal.

Next, you need to disassemble the reactor and take out the mechanical seal unit from the shaft. Once you have taken out the unit, you need to dismantle the whole unit to check if it needs a mechanical seal repair or a new part.

Once replaced or fixed, you need to assemble the mechanical seal unit and attach it back to the reactor. Next, assemble the reactor and test the seal for leakages by applying adequate pressure.

If there are no leakages, then connect the power supply and turn the reactor on. Make sure to record the mechanical seal and service on the equipment maintenance card.

Getting a mechanical seal or service done can be pretty overwhelming. That is why Robco of America is here to help you with your reactor seal repair. Our products are 100% manufactured, assembled, and tested in America, so you don’t need to pay any tariff. We also provide 24/7 emergency assistance for your needs.
